The Architecture Multichain

By the end of this you will know why so many chains exist, what an L2 actually does for you, why the same token shows up in many places, and why bridges are where the worst accidents happen.

01 · One question left open

The exchange checkpoint left you with a loose thread. Everything you learned about sending, swapping, and settling quietly assumed a single chain underneath it all. But your wallet shows tokens on several chains, and people talk about moving between them as if that were normal.

Picture the map not as one city but as several, each with its own tall buildings and floors, and ferries running across the water between them. By the end you will know why there is more than one city, what the upper floors are for, and why the ferries are the most dangerous part of the whole map.

02 · Why not one perfect chain

If one chain could be the fastest, the cheapest, the most open, and the most secure all at once, no others would need to exist. Nobody has built that city, and it is not for lack of trying. The reason is a stubborn three-way tension every chain is juggling.

It wants to be fast and cheap, it wants to be spread across many independent computers so no small group is in charge, and it wants to be secure, meaning rewriting its history is wildly expensive. Tap each corner to see what happens when a chain pushes hard on it.

03 · Two honest answers

Because nobody can win all three corners, different chains picked different bets, and two of them show the choice clearly. Solana chose to be one very fast city. It leans on fewer, more powerful machines so it can confirm quickly and cheaply, accepting fewer independent hands on the wheel as the cost.

Ethereum made the opposite bet. It keeps its ground floor as secure and decentralized as it can, accepts that this makes the ground floor slow and expensive, and lets other people build cheaper floors on top for everyday use. Same triangle, two different corners chosen on purpose.

04 · What an upper floor actually does

Back in the transaction checkpoint you tapped the cheap floors and saw that they cost a fraction of the ground floor. Here is the machinery behind that. An upper floor takes in thousands of transactions, bundles them together into one batch, and then posts a single compact receipt down to the secure ground floor.

That floor that bundles transactions and posts a receipt to the ground floor has a name: a rollup. The ground floor never replays all those thousands of transactions itself, it just records the receipt that proves they happened. That is why the floor is cheap to use while still leaning on the ground floor's security.

05 · Cheap space that borrows security

The reason a floor can be both cheap and trustworthy is that it does not try to be secure on its own. Cost drops because thousands of letters split one ground-floor receipt between them, so nobody pays for a full seat below for every small action.

Safety holds because the receipt itself lands on the secure ground floor, where rewriting history is as expensive as ever. The floor inherits the ground's security rather than building its own from scratch. That borrowed strength is the whole appeal of building upward instead of starting a brand new city.

06 · One token, many cities

Open your wallet across chains and something looks impossible. The same token appears on the ground floor, on an upper floor, and over in the fast city, all at once. In your head it is one coin, so how is it in three places?

07 · The ferry: lock and mint

The ferry that carries value between cities works by locking and minting. You hand your real coin to the ferry on the first chain, it locks that original away in a vault, and it mints a wrapped copy for you on the second chain. To come back, you burn the copy, which releases the original from the vault. That ferry has a name: a bridge.

Sit with what the wrapped copy really is. It is not new money, it is an IOU, a claim that says a real coin is locked in a vault back on the first chain. The copy is only ever as good as that lock. If the vault is emptied or broken into, your copy is suddenly backed by nothing, even though it still shows a balance.

08 · Why the ferries break worst

Put the pieces together and the danger is structural, not bad luck. A bridge holds a giant pot, since everyone's locked originals sit in one vault, which makes it an enormous prize for an attacker. It runs complex code on two chains at once, so there is far more surface area to get something wrong. And every wrapped copy depends entirely on that one lock holding.

When the vault is breached, every IOU it backed goes bad in the same moment. This is why bridges hold the worst accident record in the space. Two of the largest documented bridge hacks, Ronin and Wormhole, both happened in 2022, and they are exactly this pattern: a giant pot, intricate code, and copies left backed by nothing.

09 · The new bridge chasing yield

A friend messages you, excited. A shiny new chain is offering a much higher yield, so he is about to send most of his savings across a brand-new bridge he just heard about to get there. He wants you to tell him it is fine.

10 · Should a beginner bridge at all

It would be easy to walk away thinking bridges are the way you get between chains and leave it there. A cautious friend asks the better question: if the ferries are the most dangerous part of the map, should a beginner step onto one at all?

Pressure-test the assumption that bridging is the only way across, because often it is not.

11 · What you carry out

You can now see the whole map for what it is. Many cities exist because no single chain can win the trade-off triangle, the upper floors bundle transactions and post a receipt to the secure ground floor, and the ferries carry value by locking an original and minting a copy that is only as good as the lock. That last fact is why bridges break worst.

But notice something. Everything you have studied, sending, swapping, settling, bridging, has been about moving value around the map. None of it explained what holds a token's value steady in the first place, or how a blind chain even learns what a dollar is worth out in the real world.
